Acid reflux is when acid from the stomach leaks up into the oesophagus causing heartburn and other symptoms. Opposite to popular belief, acid reflux does not usually occur because the stomach is over acid, but because the sphincter, a band of muscle that tightens in order to stop acid entering the oesophagus does not work very well.

In some cases the pressure in the stomach rises higher than the sphincter can withstand, for example, during pregnancy, after a large meal, when bending forward or if you have a hiatus hernia.
